Backup engine puts Tonglet 13th going into Gatornationals
A spare motor LE Tonglet and the Nitro Fish Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle team is leaning on to bring a few round wins in Sunday’s Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway passed its first test in Saturday’s final qualifying runs.
Stunned when the Suzuki’s primary power plant broke Friday, team Tonglet -- led by owner/father Gary Tonglet and sons LE and GT – tuned up the replacement. And then they watched it run down the track quick enough to secure the 13th starting slot for the event.
LE Tonglet had quarter-mile runs of 6.903 seconds at 194.55 mph and an almost identical 6.905 at 194.69.
“It ran consistently and we were pleased with the results,” Tonglet said. “We have a motor we can tune up. We want to make it quicker in the first 60 feet and make it go faster.”
Tonglet’s first-round foe is Steve Johnson (No. 4, 6.825 at 197.02).
“You have to be qualified to be able to win,” Tonglet commented.
