The first race for the new Nitro Fish/Indicom Electrics Chevy Cobalt Pro Stock team went down in history this weekend during the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park when Kenny Koretsky became the second Pro Stock driver to dip into the 6.5-second elapsed times.
Koretsky's 6.594-second, 208.84-mph run was the second in the 6.5s at the time and pushed him into the No. 3 starting position for the event.
In eliminations, however, Koretsky's Cobalt made a hard move to the right at the hit of the throttle in his opening-round race against Larry Morgan. When that happened, Koretsky lifted and the car coasted through in 12.682 seconds at 68.05 mph while Morgan ran 6.629 at 208.04 mph.
Greg Hill, owner of the Indicom Electric team, merged with Koretsky's Nitro Fish team two weeks ago and Koretsky was selected to drive.
"Our goal was to make runs and get down the track this weekend and we exceeded that expectation on our first run (6.658 seconds)," said Koretsky. And he came back with the 6.594 Saturday at noon\ and wound up No. 3 in the NHRA's quickest starting field.
"We had too much transmission in it," said Eddie Guarnaccia, his crew chief, of the first round run. "And that made it move to the right. Kenny did a great job driving the car. He didn't lose his composure."
Hill also was pleased with his driver's showing. "This was a good way to start our new team. Everything went good this weekend but we were disappointed that we missed the setup in the first round."
The team has two more races this year - at Las Vegas, Oct. 27-29, and Pomona, Calif., Nov. 9-12.
