Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Set To Hit The DC Area Sept. 28-30

NORWALK, Ohio – With only two events remaining on the 2007 Knoll Gas Nitro Jam (following this weekend's event in Milan, Mich.), the $19.5 million drag racing series will stop at Maryland International Raceway, Mechanicsville, Md., September 28 – 30.

Fans attending the event, the Torco Racing Fuels President’s Cup, will witness some of the world’s top drag racers and their vehicles that can reach speeds of 320 mph.

Last year, the Nitro Funny Car battle was between Dale Creasy Jr. and Jack Wyatt, both No. one and two in the standings nearly all season long. While neither driver won the 2006 President’s Cup (the event going to Jeff Diehl) the championship chase would go down to the wire. Creasy edged Wyatt by a mere five points, the closest finish in IHRA history.

This season, the Nitro Funny Car standings aren’t as close, with Creasy having a controlling lead of the class over Terry Haddock, Wyatt, Bob Gilbertson and Andy Kelley.

On the other hand, the Knoll Gas Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Top Fuel battle is the closest it’s been since Paul Romine topped Clay Millican by seven points in 2000. After finishing runner-up that season, Millican went on to claim an unprecedented six-consecutive world championships.

This year, the story has changed. T.J. Zizzo, a relative newcomer, and veteran driver Bruce Litton have been locked in a seesaw battle all season. Litton held the lead after defeating Zizzo in the Top Fuel final at the first race of the year. Zizzo came right back and won the second race, and held the lead until Litton took it back at the beginning of August, only to lose it at the very next race.

Other points chases to watch:
· Scott Cannon Jr. leads the Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Modified class over veteran Ed Hoover
· Defending Alcohol Funny Car world champion Mark Thomas leads three-time former world champ Rob Atchison
· Robert Patrick leads the Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock class by less than 50 points over Frank Gugliotta

The Torco Racing Fuels President’s Cup will be held at Maryland International Raceway in Mechanicsville, Md., September 28 – 30. For more information, log onto IHRA.com - Homepage Of IHRA Motorsports - A Division Of Live Nation or ..:: Maryland Int'l Raceway* -* Budds Creek, MD* ::...
