LAS VEGAS (April 15) – Kenny Bernstein, owner and driver of the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car, continues to gain consistency and is just a round and a few qualifying points outside the countdown to eight.
Bernstein qualified 12th with his quickest qualifying elapsed time of the year, 4.816 seconds, at 316.97 mph.
In Sunday’s first round of eliminations, Bernstein faced off against Tony Pedregon. Bernstein took the round win, 4.818/319.37 to Pedregon’s 4.992/248.02.
In the quarterfinals, Bernstein rolled into the staging beams to race Ron Capps. In a very close side-by-side duel, it was Capps who tripped the win light with a .0032-second margin of victory.
“That was a close one,” said Bernstein. “Jimmy Walsh (crew chief), Danny DeGennaro (assistant crew chief), and the team have been doing a great job. We haven’t been fighting tire shake and we’ve been consistent in qualifying and on race day. I would say we are making good progress.”
Bernstein is 11th in NHRA Funny Car point standings, only 27 points from the field for the countdown to eight.
