BERNSTEIN MAKES BEST QUALIFYING START THIS YEAR

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 1) – Rain played havoc with the O’Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, eliminating two rounds of qualifying and causing a three-hour delay in the start of Sunday’s eliminations.

Despite little track time, six-time champion Kenny Bernstein qualified the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car in the 11th starting position (4.864/291.45), his best qualifying berth to date.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein rolled to the starting line to battle Gary Scelzi. The only duo to win Funny Car and Top Fuel championships in NHRA history, also faced each other in the first round of competition in Gainesville , Fla.

Bernstein lost traction by the 330-foot mark, while Scelzi had a trouble-free run to take the round win.

“Jimmy (Walsh, crew chief) is continuing to make progress,” said Bernstein. “We know these fields are tough, but we’re making strides in the right direction. We had two rounds of qualifying Friday, and with the rain on Saturday, nobody made any runs, so we went from Friday qualifying to Sunday racing on a pretty green track.

“The more runs we make, the more we learn. We are looking forward to racing in Las Vegas in two weeks.”

Bernstein is 13th in NHRA Funny Car point standings and is only 48 points out of the countdown to eight for the championship chase.
