Johnson Jr. Opens Qualifying in the No. 5 Position

Indianapolis, Friday: Eight-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson, Jr. blasted his Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car to a pass of 4.747-seconds to claim the fifth quickest elapsed time of the opening day of qualifying for the 52nd annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

The Avon, Ind. racer, who enters the prestigious U.S. Nationals positioned sixth in the POWERade Funny Car standings, used a tune-up from veteran crew chief Mike Green to blister the ORP quarter mile in 4.747 seconds at 322.96 mph on Friday evening. One year ago, Johnson drove to a run of 4.748-seconds to kick-off qualifying at NHRA drag racing’s marquee event. He qualified fifth at this event last season.

“The first qualifying run is so important, especially here with the Skoal Showdown on Sunday” Johnson said. “I’m extremely pleased with that run. To take pretty much a brand new race car and go 4.74, that’s a great start. The conditions will be great all weekend and Mike (Green) is confident that we can go quicker and maybe run a 4.60.”
