Mopar® Dodge Avenger NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson advanced to the quarterfinals today in the elimination rounds of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals, losing to Greg Anderson at Texas Motorplex near Dallas. Johnson moved up to fourth in the point standings with his first-round win over Jeg Coughlin.
Johnson scored the No. 1 Qualifier Award (his fifth of the season) but nonetheless faced a tough opening-round match against No. 16 qualifier and four-time world champ Coughlin. The Team Mopar veteran was up to the challenge, dispatching his opponent in a thrilling drag race with a 6.578-second pass (quickest of the round) at 209.49 mph to Coughlin’s 6.603/208.20 mark and slightly better reaction time. Johnson’s margin of victory: about six inches.
The road was no easier for Johnson in the quarterfinals, where he faced three-time Pro Stock champ Greg Anderson. The Greeneville, Tenn. native recorded a 6.604/209.79 effort, which wasn’t enough to overcome Anderson’s quicker 6.583/208.71 mark.
“We ran awful good all week, I drove well and we moved up a spot in the points,” said Johnson. “The drivers ahead of us in the points went farther than us, so it’s going to be really tough now, but we’ve got 12 more rounds of racing left and anything can happen. We’re going to go for it in every round.
“In that round (against Anderson) we left a lot on the table with the car. Whether we could have beat him? Probably not, because he had a great reaction time, but it would have been a lot closer if we would have made the run we made in the first round.
“The J&J Racing team really stuck together here at Dallas. We rebounded from last week, and I’m proud of them for that, and for the way we qualified. All three of the drivers we’re chasing could lose first round at the next race at Reading and I could win and be right back in it. That’s the way we’re going to think.”
Mopar-powered Pro Stocker V. Gaines came out on the losing of a first-round match with Larry Morgan. Next up for Johnson and Gaines is the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals, Oct. 7–10 at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa.

More than 70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.
Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s—the muscle-car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts.
