John Coughlin looking for three-peat in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct 3) – Entering this weekend’s Torco Race Fuels NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park, Team JEGS driver John Coughlin will be seeking to win his third event in as many weeks. In the midst of one of the best seasons of his career, Coughlin won the Super Stock title three weeks ago at the Division 1 Lucas Oil Series event at Atco Dragway. Last week, he claimed the win in the JEGS Top Dragster Shootout. Now, he’s looking for another win in Super Stock, one that will help solidify his place among the nation’s top ten drivers.

“Right now, I’m ranked tenth in Super Stock and it’s important to me and my whole team that we stay there,” said Coughlin. “I can still claim points at two national events so I could do myself a lot of good by winning a few rounds at this race. If I can win another race, I can even finish as high as fourth or fifth and that would be quite an honor especially since I’m racing a brand new car this year. Drivers in the top ten also get free entry to national events next season so it’s definitely worth shooting for.”

Coughlin debuted his Super Stock Chevy Cobalt last March at the Southeast Division event in Orlando, Fla., and in 12 events, he has lost in the first round just once. He also debuted a new Undercover Chassis dragster for the new Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster Series and secured the season points title after posting three victories.

“I had a great year in Top Dragster as well, and I’m extremely happy that we’ve got that championship wrapped up,” Coughlin continued. “Now, we’ve shifted our focus to Super Stock racing. The only thing I haven’t done this year is win a national event and I’d like to think we can make that happen.”

In addition to John’s championship in the Top Dragster Series, Mike Coughlin has officially wrapped up the Dart Top Sportsman Series championship by virtue of his win at last week’s JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals in Columbus. Younger brother, Jeg is also one of the leading contenders for the POWERade Pro Stock title and can secure his spot in the Countdown to One with a solid finish in Richmond.
