John Coughlin’s title defense begins in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 6) – A year ago, John Coughlin arrived at the annual Orlando Speed World Dragway Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event with a pair of new race cars and returned home with a coveted NHRA “Wally” trophy after claiming the Top Dragster title. By season’s end, Coughlin had won three more times and clinched the Division 3 Top Dragster championship. He also posted a second-place finish in Super Stock, making 2007 one of the most successful years of his career. Coughlin’s title defense begins this weekend as he returns to Orlando, and once again, he’ll be racing a brand new car in Top Dragster.

“Last year, we brought a couple of new cars here and it worked out pretty well,” said Coughlin. “We’re going to try and do the same thing this time. After what we accomplished last year, I know that I’ve got a tough act to follow, but we’re going to give it our best shot.

“The JEGS.com Top Dragster I raced last season was an awesome car but you always think you can build one that’s a little bit better so that’s why I had Undercover Chassis build a new car this winter,” Coughlin continued. “The Top Dragster class is getting more and more popular each year and as a result, the cars are getting faster and faster. Last year, my car was running in the 7.30s, which was fine, but now, I’m planning on running consistent 6.90s, which is what you need in order to qualify in the top half of the field.”

In addition to his new Top Dragster, Coughlin will also be racing his JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt in Super Stock. He recently tested the Super Stock car at Gainesville Raceway and was extremely pleased with the results.

“The car was awesome,” he said. “I ran an 8.67 four times in a row which is a great run for that car. More importantly, I was amazed at how consistent it was. I was also very pleased with my driving because all four of my reaction times were within a hundredth of a second of being perfect. If we can repeat that in Orlando, we should be in really good shape.”
