DELAWARE, Ohio (Feb. 19) -- JEGS Automotive, Inc has become the first large entity in motorsports to announce a contingency program for the 10-race AMS Pro Mod Challenge series this year. The mail order parts giant will pay $500 to the winner and $100 to the runner-up to competitors displaying a JEGS contingency decal in competition.
Troy Coughlin, one of the four Coughlin brothers who run the multi-million dollar enterprise out of Delaware, Ohio, hopes his company's involvement in the class will lead to other interest from Corporate America.
"I have a real passion for this class," said Coughlin, who will race a turbo-charged JEGS.com Pontiac GTO in this year's series. "It is our hope that with JEGS High Performance getting behind the class that other companies will follow suit and make this class more stable and economically viable than it has been in the past. It's obviously very popular with the fans and the racers themselves, but without steady corporate support it could get lost in the shuffle. We don't want that to happen."
Coughlin cites a lengthy list of Pro Mod racers and crewmen who regularly use JEGS High Performance to fulfill their inventory needs and he is hopeful that by getting involved on a financial level with the class that other teams and fans will support JEGS. Coughlin and series director Matthew Brammer believe other companies will receive the same loyalty and spike in sales when they get involved.
"If you look down the lists of contingency sponsors in all the major motorsports series, the companies you see are the same ones our competitors and fans support," Brammer said. "This is a great time for them to get involved with our series and support a brand of racing that race fans are extremely excited about. We're still in our infancy; our brightest days are ahead of us."
Beginning at this year's 38th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway in Central Florida, the AMS Pro Mod Challenge presented by Tindle Enterprises pits the best blown, nitrous, and turbo-charged racers against one another for the coveted BAE Championship Pro Mod Cup.
"The speed these cars reach and the variety of wild looking racecars is what really piqued my interest in this class when they first started running exhibition events at NHRA events back in early 2000," Coughlin said. "Now, with my kids all going in 100 different directions at home, I wanted to be around and spend more time watching them grow up. The 10-race format fit perfectly for me.
"What I noticed, even when I was still running Pro Stock, was how popular the Pro Mod class is with the fans and even the other racers. I'd be willing to guess that just about every professional racer out there would jump at the chance to take one of those cars for a ride. It's just raw horsepower and speed and that's what drag racing's all about.
"The employees of JEGS Mail Order are proud to announce this contingency program and we're excited to reward the racers for their efforts this year."
