Jeg Coughlin Jr / Pre-race Notes (Norwalk, OH) - NHRA/JEGS (1 Viewer)

[coverattach=1]After recently celebrating his 39th birthday, Jeg Coughlin enters this weekend’s NHRA Nationals in Norwalk on a hot streak after winning the last two NHRA Full Throttle events in Joliet, Ill. and Englishtown, N.J. Jeg beat Mike Edwards in both final rounds and currently enjoys a 109-point lead over Edwards in the points standings.

Jeg is the first NHRA driver to eclipse the 1,000 point barrier this season. His total of 1,018 points is 252 more than he had at this point in the 2008 season and 266 more than he had at this point in 2007, both seasons ended with Jeg as the NHRA Pro Stock champion.

Jeg is off to one of the best starts of his career in 2009, having won five of the first 11 races. In addition to his recent victories in Joliet and Englishtown, Jeg has won in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Madison. He was also a runner-up in Atlanta and Houston.

Jeg has won 32 of a possible 44 eliminations rounds thus far in 2009 and is one of just two NHRA pros, along with Top Fuel driver Antron Brown, without a first-round loss this season. Last season, Jeg did not win his 32nd round of competition until the final round of the Brainerd event in August.

Jeg will be joined in Norwalk by his 18-year old nephew, Troy Coughlin Jr., who will be racing his Jegs.com dragster in the Super Comp class. Troy Jr. also accompanied Jeg to the recent JEGS U.S. Open E.T. Bracket race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis.

With 46 career Pro Stock wins, Jeg ranks fourth all-time among Pro Stock drivers. Only Warren Johnson (96), Bob Glidden (85) and Greg Anderson (57) have more titles.

Jeg is the reigning NHRA Pro Stock champion. He has earned four NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock titles in his career, including back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008. His other titles came in 2000 and 2002. As a sportsman racer, Jeg also captured the Super Gas championship in 1992.

In 247 career Pro Stock races, Jeg has reached the final round 75 times, recording 46 wins. Including his 13 sportsman victories, Jeg has won a total of 59 times, good for tenth place on NHRA’s all time wins list.

While in Norwalk, Jeg will also participate in the prestigious K&N Horsepower Challenge. The K&N Challenge is a special $50,000 to win event that is open only to the top eight Pro Stock racers based on their qualifying performance over the previous year. This will be Jeg’s eighth appearance in the K&N Challenge and he won the event in 1999 and 2000.

Norwalk Raceway Park is one of just two facilities on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series tour (along with zMax Dragway in Charlotte) where Jeg has not scored a professional victory. In two appearances, Jeg’s best finish in Norwalk was a semifinal in 2007. Jeg has won at least one NHRA national event title at 21 different facilities.
