Milan, MI – There's an old saying in the sporting world about wins that are less than spectacular. "When it's all over they don't ask how. They ask how many". This was one of those wins for Mike Janis and his Eaton Team. After making it look easy in Friday's first qualifying session running a jaw dropping 6.053 at 238.05 and taking the Last Man Standing Bonus points the Eaton crew showed that hard work and a little luck help win the "ugly ones".
After struggling through Saturday's qualifying, including wounding a bullet, Janis fell to fourth on the ladder pairing him in round one with fellow Western New Yorker, Mike Stawicki. When both Stawicki and Janis went into tire shake it was at the hit it was Janis who was able to recover first and take the win running an off pace 6.39 elapsed time at just over 215 miles per hour.
The win over Stawicki set up a second round against, nitrous standout, Pat Stoken. This time the Eaton team put it all together with Janis getting the jump off the tree and taking a smooth ride to a win light with a 6.12 to Stoken's 6.14.
Janis' semi-final opponent Scott Cannon junior showed lumberjack like prowess cutting a .014 light and was out on a tire shaking Janis when he encountered traction problems. With neither driver willing to say uncle it turned in to an old fashioned driver's war with both drivers on and off the throttle looking for traction. As Cannon nearly tagged the wall Janis regained control and motored to what could only be called an ugly win.
"I don't care how ugly that was we needed it," said Janis. "If we want to have a shot at the title we have to win those races".
In the final Janis gave up lane choice to Burton Auxier. Auxier, who defeated Chip King, Danny Rowe, and, number one qualifier, Kenny Lang held lane choice in the finals after running a 6.18 in the semis. With the two staged it was Auxier out of the gate first and the first into tire shake. Janis also hit some shake but was able to feather the throttle and drive through it to earn his 17th career IRON MAN.
"We earned this one as a team. My guys busted their humps all weekend and I wouldn't be here without them," said an elated Janis. Mike (Mike Janis junior), Steve (Hermann), and Joe (Janis) really shine when they need to.
Janis' team credits their recent success to the support they receive from both Eaton and it's employees. "Everyone I meet and deal with from both Eaton and Aeroquip are top notch people. Being able to tap into Eaton's brain trust has done wonders to help this team continually move forward and I can't thank them enough for their support," said Driver/Team Owner Mike Janis.
With only two events remaining on the 2007 Knoll Gas Nitro Jam (following this weekend's event in Milan, Mich.), the $19.5 million drag racing series will stop at Maryland International Raceway, Mechanicsville, Md., September 28 – 30.
In other Janis family news: The Janis family received notification this weekend that family patriarch and co-founder of Jan-Cen Motorsports, the late Jim Janis sr., will be inducted into the New York State Amateur Trap Shooting Hall of Fame in a ceremony next Summer. nysata
