I have been summonsed to attend Jury selection in May.

Dangit, when they say "all you have to do in life is die and pay taxes" why not add that you may need to do something you don't really want to do?

please feel free to move to the country of your choice where if you are
found guilty of a crime, or on the wrong side of circumstantial evidence,
you may not be innocent until proven guilty and subject to
due process of law.
consider it a privilege to serve jury duty and take your time if asked
to deliberate a verdict.

I have been a registered voter for 18 years and never been called.

I know our system isn't perfect, but it's better than any other I've heard of. I'd be glad to serve my community.

Kelly, same here. I am 26 years old and have been a registered voter since I could become one and havent ever been caleld to jury duty but they call my wife every year.

I had never been called for jury duty until 2 years ago. It was a capital murder case and I got picked. It was very interesting to see how the process works, but I don't ever want to see crime scene photos again. It was a brutal murder of a husband & wife and the guilty consisted of their son, his girlfriend, her best friend and a manager of an I.H.O.P. These idiots thought that they could collect all the insurance money and move to El Salvador and live like kings and queens! The girlfriend (who was the mastermind at 19 years old) received the death penalty and the rest of them got life.

Here in Mass if you get called you can postpone it up to 1 year. I got called to go in Jan. but postponed it until the summer. They did not need me that summer and I got called to go the following Jan. Again I postponed it until the summer and again it got canceled. Finally the 3rd year they called me for a July day and this time I had to go, atleast they finally realized when I wanted to go :) . In the end they ended up not needing us, so it was nice to get out early. I have been called since but knew well in advance that it was canceled. When I got called that time I had recently moved into my house and had not registered yet to vote. I believe most states use voter registration as only one of the ways they select juries. They also use things such as RMV/DMV records and tax records.

I've been put "on-call" every two years like clockwork... only had to report twice in the last 25 years....

The boss on the other hand, has "served" on Jury 3 times since 1991... the last time was last year...

I am surprised at you Samuel. All these times that you've offered your point of view when nobody requests it and the one time when the government calls you in because they think they want it, you piss and moan about it.

If you are lucky, they'll decide they don't want your opinion either, and you'll get passed over.

What is it about Norfolk? A friend of mine just finished being "on-call", and she said that it happens every two years.

Very well said Jenn!!!:p  :p

For the longest time I didn't register to vote simply cause I didn't want to serve Jury duty! I finally relented a few years back, my first case of JD was a personal injury case agains't a local Supermarket. This case had Fraud written all over it! This gal was caught on Camera faking a fall in one of the isles. The thing that suprised me more than anything is Most of the Females on the Jury still sided with the Woman. Saying how she wasn't able to earn a decent living. Me as well as one other guy were pretty outspoken and Said BS! We voted to award her $50!:D :D :D

Here is a little thought that I asked the judge the last time I was called to JD. If you were on trial wouldnt you want a jury of people who wanted to be there instead of people who were forced to be there? He was not very happy with me but I told him that most people dont want to be here and I wouldnt want them on my jury. After a while he agreed with me but said its the system right now so we have to work with it. By the way, that was 2 years ago and I havent been called since:D :) :p

Actually, for the record after a little while in thought it wouldn't be so bad, only thing is I would miss work and they pay you what, 50 cents a day?

I dont know where you work Sam but most company's pay you for the day if you take in your jury slip. Or atleast they do here in Texas, not to mention we get a whooping $6!!! Then they ask you if you would like to donate it.

I dont mind, I get paid while I'm there and it's interesting to see how the system works. A little boring at times but still kinda fun.

Yeah it would be kind fun, but it depends on the case. Knowing my luck it would probably be a "trial-of-the century" case that lasts 6 months.

Then you have to use that $6.00 + some to pay for parking!!!

Could have something to do with voters vs number of court dates that 'go' to trial.... and seriously, Oct every two years fer me... Kat gets it every spring on opposite years.... by the way, we live just west of Military Circle... at Raby Rd. off the blvd.

Been called twice, excused the first time, got as far as the jury selection process the second - but I was far enough down the list that they came up with twelve names well before getting to me (I was the last name on the list).
