It’s Down To The Wire For Steve Johnson: “The Championship Is Too Close To Call!”

IRONDALE, AL 10/28/08 Caught up in election fever, Steve Johnson of Irondale, Ala. has checked the polls, canvassed his supporters and checked with the experts, and the verdict is in: The NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle championship is still “too close to call.”

“I admit I’m a long shot in this campaign,” Johnson said from Election Headquarters, a.k.a. Steve Johnson Racing, “and I know that winning this POWERade championship is going to come down to a number of factors. At this coming weekend’s AC Delco Nationals in Las Vegas I can’t afford a single mistake, even the tiniest of slip-ups. Everything has to go perfectly for our Snap-on Tools/WyoTech Technical Schools Suzuki. At the same time I have to hope my opposition for the Office of Champion make the kind of critical mistakes that will lose them support with the all-important win lights at the end of the quarter mile drag strip.”

While Johnson remains a championship contender, he also knows that the odds against him are pretty steep. “We began the Countdown to 1 with two straight victories,” he says, “ but after that our luck turned bad, and frankly, I allowed myself to get caught up in the hype. Running for a national title like Office of Champion is pretty new to me, but now we’re down to the final days of the campaign, and there’s no margin for error.

“If I can be serious for just a moment – and everyone knows how difficult that is for me – winning the U.S. Nationals and then the Carolinas Nationals was incredibly special for every member of our team, as well as for the hundreds of Snap-on Tools franchisees and WyoTech students who have supported us all year long. No matter how this turns out, that support has been extremely gratifying for all of us. Winning the NHRA POWERade championship would be a dream come true, and we’re going to give it our all to make that happen.

“I want to make one last point (doesn’t every politician?). No matter which candidate you’re supporting, make darn sure you get out there and vote next Tuesday. It’s not only your right as an American, you should consider it the way I do: It’s a privilege and an honor to have a voice in selecting our leaders. Remember, you can’t complain about things if you haven’t exercised your right to vote!”
