Al Capone ran South Chicago in the 20's! Until the Valentine's day Massacre of 1929! That pretty much ended Capone's rein!
That's what I was thinkin'--and there was a song a while back (hope Karl's online to back me up on this one) by a group called Paper Lace called "The Night Chicago Died" and if I remember correctly a line went..."on the South Side of Chicago...Back in the bad old days, back in the USA" or something like that. You old enough to remember that big time hit, Joe?

Uhhhh .... no .... the St. Valentine's Day Massacre consolidated Capone's power in Chicago. The hit was ordered to eliminate several key members of Bugs Moran's "North Side Gang" and greatly expanded Capone's territory in Chicago.

FBI Agent Elliot Ness ended Capone's reign in '32 or '33 when he got him on evasion of income tax charges ... haven't you guys seen "The Untouchables"?

EDIT: Here is Wiki's page on the event:

Thanks for the clarification, Chris--and if I remember correctly, wasn't it syphylis in Alcatraz that finally ended Capone for good?
