TOTTENHAM, ONTARIO (January 4, 2008) – While he has been around fast machines most of his life, Ike Maier has only raced for a handful of years.
“I guess you could say I’m a bit of a thrill-seeker,” said Maier, who finished fourth in the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA) in 2007, his rookie year. “About four years ago I went to the track, saw the Pro Modifieds, and said ‘that’s what I want to do’.”
So after running in the OSCA Outlaw Street class in 2006, Maier stepped up his racing endeavors, and now owns and drives the Maier Motorsports 1969 Chevy Camaro-bodied Pro Modified. His competition background includes motocross motorcycles and powerboat racing, but he said driving one of the world’s fastest door slammers has taken him to a new level of speed and acceleration.
Powered by an Atchison-prepared Alan Johnson 526-cubic inch blown engine in a G-Force Race Cars chassis, Maier continues to get more comfortable and quicker passes each time he goes down the track.
He said he has some new items for the car for 2008, but would not allude to specifics. “Let’s just say there will be some new go fast stuff from Atchison this year,” he added.
Maier also said he enjoys the group associated with the PMRA, and the racers he competes with. He said he was pleased with his performance in 2007, and plans to improve for 2008, especially at one of the PMRA venues.
“I thought Sanair would have been easier than it was,” he admitted. “I’d like to get some practice runs down that track. I’m really looking forward to going back to Quebec.”
Sponsored by Maier Trucking, Atchison Machine Service Inc., Straight Line Racing, RMF Canada, Hutches Transmissions, The Hitch House, and King Tool & Die, Maier’s crew consists of Joe Roy and Blair Archer, along with Debbie Doucet.
“I guess Debbie is the team’s general manager,” said Maier. “Along with her starting line duties, she gets the groceries and feeds us, along with a lot of other things that help make a race team operate.”
PMRA tour stops in 2008 include two dates at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, Lancaster Raceway Park in New York State, Sanair in Quebec and the Southwestern Ontario track of Grand Bend Motorplex.
Negotiations are underway with several US race tracks based in Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania with the plan of presenting a seven-event PMRA drag racing series this season.

About the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA):
The Pro Modified Racing Association, Pro Modified Racing Association, was organized late in 2004, started racing operations in 2005, and is entering its fourth year of operation. The PMRA is a self-governing organization with input from its teams, and adheres to the technical and safety rules as outlined by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The series has event venues in Ontario, Quebec, and New York State.
Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot rodding, and the class is one of drag racing’s most exciting and colorful classes, offering a diverse group of race cars with different types of 2,500-horsepower engines.
No Pro Modified team has dominated in the history of PMRA events. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, each event was topped off with a different winner, and 2006 Grand Bend Motorplex winner Joe Boniferro became the first repeat winner in series history, winning the 2007 Grand Bend race.
Combining classic body styles and modern equipment, constructors are permitted, within established rules and parameters, to modify and enhance the cars in both appearance and performance. The cars are fuelled by gasoline or methanol, propelling them down the quarter-mile in low six-second times at over 200 miles per hour. The PMRA provides drag race fans the opportunity to see, hear, and experience the popular Pro Modifieds, known as "the world's fastest door slammers".
