NORWALK, Ohio (November 7, 2011) – With renovations complete and the track ready to go, the International Hot Rod Association is pleased to announce the much-anticipated return of championship sportsman drag racing to Memphis International Raceway.

The track, located in beautiful Millington, Tenn., will host three full days of sportsman drag racing at the IHRA World Finals in October of 2012 featuring three distinct races and the crowning of champions in all of IHRA’s sportsman categories.

“Memphis International Raceway is honored to be the host track for the 2012 IHRA World Finals,” Vice President and General Manager Pam Kendrick stated. “Next season marks the initial year for the IHRA and MIR partnership to build a successful program for the racers. We are excited to cap off our first full season as Memphis International Raceway with the World Finals.”

More centrally located than ever before, the IHRA is thrilled to be bringing its biggest weekend of racing yet to Memphis International Raceway to close out the 2012 season.

“Ever since Memphis joined the IHRA family we have looked forward to holding our biggest sportsman race of the year at this incredible facility,” said Skooter Peaco, IHRA VP of Race Operations. “Memphis is a better location for our diverse group of racers that will be traveling from all corners of North America. It is also the perfect location from a facility perspective for hosting a race of this magnitude. Racers and fans alike will certainly enjoy the caliber of racing this event produces year after year.”

The 2012 IHRA Summit World Finals will feature three separate races beginning with the $5,000 to win, final Summit Tournament of Champions qualifier known as the Summit Sportsman Spectacular. The weekend will conclude with the crowning of champions in the Summit Tournament of Champions and Summit SuperSeries.

This year the extremely popular event attracted racers from 26 states and five Canadian provinces to take part in the huge weekend of racing. And with the event moving to a facility like Memphis International Raceway, IHRA officials expect the event to only continue to prosper.

“We look forward to holding our biggest all-sportsman event yet next year,” Peaco said. “From the great weather to the incredible facilities, we are thrilled to showcase our $200,000 Summit Sportsman World Championship weekend at Memphis International Raceway.”
