CLERMONT, Ind. - There's an old saying in drag racing,"if you don't redlight every now and then, you aren't trying." Such was the case for NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Don Hudson and his Red Line Oil backed team during this past weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Competing in the quickest field in NHRA history, Hudson left a mere .004 of a second too soon in the first round.
Hudson, from Stockton, Calif., qualified the Red Line Oil Camaro tenth in the field with a 5.674 second pass at 252.52 mph in a field that featured a record 5.740 bump. In his first round matchup with No. 7 qualifier Bob Tasca III, Hudson left just .004 too soon, giving the win to Tasca, who went on to run a 5.643 at 254.71 mph.
"When the field is tight like it is, you have to go for it on the tree," said Hudson. "I knew it was going to be a close race, and I just pulled the trigger a little too soon. Sometimes you win on the tree, sometimes you lose on it."
"The car ran very well, and we squared off with the best in the business," Hudson continued. "I'm proud to say we were a part of the quickest field in the history of the class here at Indy. We're definitely not hanging our head after this weekend."
