Las Vegas, Saturday: Three-time NHRA winner and Las Vegas resident “Hot” Rod Fuller drove his Valvoline Top Fuel dragster to the No. 10 qualifying position Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motors Speedway. He posted a qualifying-best run of 4.571-seconds during the sixth annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.
Entering the final day of qualifying at his home track in the No. 9 position after carding a 4.584-second pass on Friday’s first qualifying effort, Fuller bettered his mark by powering his Lee Beard-tuned Valvoline dragster to a run of 4.571 seconds at 326.48. That kept Fuller ninth in the 16-car order.
On his fourth and final qualifying attempt of the weekend, which also was the final round of the Budweiser Shootout at Las Vegas bonus event, Fuller raced to a performance of 4.669 at 226.95. Fuller was on a solid pass until the motor broke the blower belt near the 1,000-foot mark causing the car to slow to the 226.95-mph speed.
“On paper, we’re really No. 2,” Fuller said. “We ran that 4.518 in the second round of the (Budweiser) Shootout, but it didn’t count towards qualifying. I like our bracket and I don’t think too many teams want to face us. I hope we can play spoiler for some of the title contenders.”
Fuller will face off against No. 7 qualifier Melanie Troxel in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at The Strip at LVMS. Fuller is 4-1 versus Troxel this season.
