Hernandez three-peats in Houston

BAYTOWN, TX - The hometown advantage proved unstoppable for Josh Hernandez, driver of the AMS/Dr. Moon's Rage '68 Camaro Pro Mod as he won his second AMS Pro Mod Challenge race in 2007. Hernandez, a Houston-area resident, has won the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals the past three years, making his record in Pro Mod perfect at the event.

"I don't think the magnitude of this has really hit me yet,” said Hernandez as he was handed his $10,000 check and the coveted AMS Eagle trophy.

"With the amazing cars that are running with us here, any one of them could have walked away with a win, but I guess the Dr. Moon Horsepower was what made the difference," he said.

The event was marked by heavy rains and long delays, forcing series administrators to set the field after only one session of qualifying in which Hernandez ran an off-pace 7.269/140.4 pass to take the No. 14 spot. Despite his low qualifying position, Hernandez and his team worked through muddy conditions and long weather-related delays to get into the final round on Sunday. Hernandez faced off against Scott Cannon, Jr. to defend his title, and was able to hang on in a peddle-fest final round under the lights and a full moon for the win, 6.208/225.26 to 6.227/233.72.

"Howard [Moon, crew chief] is so amazing - I don't think there's anyone else out there who can tune a car the way he does. He's definitely a doctor of tuning - if not a wizzard.

"I love racing at this track, and I've had really good success here. Now I want to take that success and keep the momentum going as we move on to Atlanta in a couple of weeks," Hernandez said.

The next race in the AMS Staff leasing Pro Modified Challenge presented by Tindle Enterprises, Inc. is the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals outside of Atlanta, Georgia, April 26-28.
