<P> (8/31/08)CLEREMONT, Ind. - Defending JEGS ProMod Challenge world champion Josh Hernandez took over the top position in qualifying for the MAC Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals. The Texs-native jumped to the top spot in the first round of the day with a 6.010/240.98 but never made another run due to the necessity of extensive track repairs after the Pro Mod driven by Steve Engle crashed at the top of the track during the night session.
"Steve is such a great man - I'm just praying that everything is ok. That was a really tough crash because he was going around 240 m.p.h. when he hit the wall. He pushed back a four foot section of the wall like around eight feet, and then ended up upside down in his car," Hernandez recounted.
“The Safety Safari did a great job getting him out, taking good care with him. They air-lifted him to the hospital but said he was talking the whole way there, so, the signs are good,” he said.
According to series rules, any runs completed before the accident are counted, and those swho were not able to complete a run lose the round.
"The track was so good out there tonight, I'm sure we would have seen several cars run in the fives, but, we'll never know.
Jim Oddy had this Team Rage Camaro set on high, but we'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see what else we can do.
"All I can say is that the qualifying isn't over, and I don't think for a second that our 6.01 will be the top after tomorrow's session," Hernandez said.
"It can play really emotional mind games when you see one of your friends hit the wall like that, so all of us on the crew just want to calm our minds to stay focused. Our prayers are with Steve and his wife Tonya, and we'll just hope for the very best," he added.
Qualifying at O'Reilly Raceway Park continues with one final qualifier at 2 p.m. Sunday before the first round of eliminations Sunday evening at 5:10 p.m. The balance of eliminations will be run on Labor Day beginning at 11 a.m.
As always, Team Rage's success is due to the outstanding support of our corporate partners: Redline Oil, NGK Spark Plugs, VP Racing Fuels, Richmond Gears, Mechanix Wear, Permatex Products, InterLinc Mortgage, & Hoosier Tires.
