COMMERCE, Ga. - It's not his hometown, and it's not the first race of the year, but Josh Hernandez, driver of the Dr. Moon's Rage '68 Camaro Pro Mod, hopes to continue his winning ways in the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge presented by Tindle Enterprises, Inc. this weekend at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Hernandez has won the first two AMS Pro Mod events this season, leaving in his wake a series of record-setting runs.
The Houston native is fresh off a three-time win at his home-track, Houston Raceway Park, earlier this month, and soundly set the ET record for Pro Modified racers worldwide with his 5.912-second blast in eliminations in Gainesville, Fla. in March.
"Really, our success with this AMS/Rage Camaro is a testament to Howard [Moon, Hernandez' crew chief] and the guys, and how hard they work week-in and week-out," Hernandez said.
Almost four round-wins ahead of his teammate Troy Critchley in the BAE Championship Cup points-race, Hernandez knows he can't let down his guard.
"Every round counts, every lap down the track. You never know what will happen on race-day, and with the competition so fierce, I'm really aware that I have a target on my back. I try to race my race every day, but, on a new track, it will definitely be a challenge to get some good numbers for Sunday," he said.
This weekend marks the first time in five years the AMS Pro Mod Challenge has competed at the Atlanta Dragway.
Hernandez and the AMS-Dr. Moon's Rage team are scheduled to make qualifying runs at 3:15 and 6:15 p.m. on Friday, April 27 and at 11:15 a.m. Saturday morning. Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and conclude on Sunday, April 29.
