Yep, that's right. 100 years ago today Oklahoma was officially recognized as the 46th state in the union. From land runs to dust bowls to oil wells, bombs, tornadoes, and everything else fate has thrown our way, I'm proud to call this place home!

Wahoo! My birthplace! I always remember how old Oklahoma is because my Grandma Jones was born the same year. She would've been 100 Sept. 7th.

I'm surprised my 11-year-old son, Matt, didn't call me this morning to tell me that. The kid seems to know pretty much everything trivial about each state (i.e. when they became a state, their state nickname, the official bird, etc). When we drove down to Galveston, TX (yep, Kelly, my only time in Houston 'til March) from Minnesota to board a cruise ship in 2004, he was thrilled that we were going to drive thru Oklahoma and was hoping to see a tornado. He's fascinated by weather and says he's going to be a meteorologist and wants to live in Oklahoma because "it's tornado alley, Dad".

I second that wholeheartedly!!!

And to celebrate, maybe OU will lose this weekend!!! J/K with you Tom. Even though I'm from Texas and were bred to hate Oklahoma and Louisanna I have to say even though they have lost a game I still think they are the 2 best teams in college football. Especially if they play like they did earlier in the year. Happy BDay Oklahoma.

So, I asked my son, 11-year-old Matt (see my earlier post above) which state's birthday was today. He thought a few seconds and said Oklahoma and it's their 100th. He then proceeded to tell me that only 5 states were granted statehood in the 1900's and then named them. I asked him what about California? He informed me they became a state in 1850 and that they were the 31st state. The kid freakin' amazes me.

Thanks for the replies, everybody.

There was a giant whing-ding affair in downtown OKC last night with a long list of famous Okies. Carrie Underwood, Jimmy Webb, Garth, Reba, Toby, Vince Gill, The Flaming Lips, All-American Rejects, all 5 living Miss Americas (including the reigning MA), Barry Switzer, Bobby Murcer, Johnny Bench, etc., etc.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend but they did use a couple of our Steinway grand pianos for the performances. I recorded most of the broadcast, hopefully I can catch the entire show on my DVR this week.
