It looks like the climax of a remarkable rookie season will be the year's final race for Matt Hagan and crew this weekend at the IHRA World Finals at Rockingham Dragway.
Despite winning more races than any driver on the tour Hagan is 65 points behind leader Terry Haddock going into this weekend's event. The reason? One DNQ event and the staggering number of penalty points the team has lost.
"We've been penalized more than all of the other drivers in the top 12combined," explains Hagan.
While some of the penalties have been questionable, Hagan isn't letting it color his perception of his rookie season.
"Racing in this IHRA Funny Car class has been a wonderful experience for us," Hagan says. "I hope the rumors that it might be going away are not true because this is a great class for the fans and drivers and it has given us an opportunity to get started in the Nitro ranks."
As for the championship, Hagan knows it is up to circumstance. "We've heard all of the different ways the scenarios can play out, as far as what it would take for us to pass Haddock or hold off Lee and Kelley," says Haqan. "Personally, I know the only thing we have control over is having the best race we can and at the end of the day we'll see where everyone ends up."
It promises to be an electrifying conclusion to the season with 3 drivers within possible striking distance of Terry Haddock's lead. Having won the Spring Nationals earlier in the year Hagan is hoping to draw on his experience at Rockingham to put an exclamation point on his breakthrough Nitro Funny Car debut.
