Intent on getting a grip on a clutch issue and finishing the final three 2011 NHRA Countdown to the Championship races in fine form, Greg Stanfield and the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks Pro Stock GXP team made test laps last week.
“Now we’ll go to Phoenix and see if we fixed it,” said Stanfield, who begins qualifying Friday for Sunday’s Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway in nearby Chandler. “The clutch has been our biggest problem at the last couple of races and we wanted to get it right so we can close the gap (in Countdown points).
He finished second last year in Full Throttle Series action and is now sixth with 2,175 points, only 58 behind third-place Mike Edwards with 12 rounds of action remaining. Each round win is worth 20 points.
The season concludes with stops at Las Vegas, Oct. 28-30 and Pomona, Calif., Nov. 10-14, and that’s fine with Stanfield. “I like racing at those tracks,” he concluded.
