Gray looking for improvements to equal fun

DALLAS, Prerace: With only five races left in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season, veteran Johnny Gray is looking to get his beautiful Dodge Stratus Pro Stocker headed into 2009 in peak shape, starting with this weekend’s O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.

The Artesia, New Mexico businessman has had some frustrations this year with his Mopar’s performance and has tried everything conceivable to make improvements. And he’s happy with some, like his new Rick Jones car, but very perplexed with others, like his power plant.

“I’m so thrilled with our new car,” said Gray. “It drives so nice compared to our old one. We did the right thing when we bought that car. Now if we could just get our power straightened out, I’d be a happy guy. Our car is a killer for the first half of the track. We’ve got some of the best 60 foot times out there, but then it just falls on its face. And that’s what does us in, run after run.

“I certainly hope things will be better this weekend. If I see some improvement in our performance, I’ll be having a lot more fun, that’s for sure.”

Gray is looking for double the fun this weekend, as his son Shane will be competing in Competition Eliminator. And with a little luck there will be two Gray’s qualifying and going rounds on Sunday.
