(March 6, 2008) Boca Raton, FL - Steve Quint's Next Generation race team traveled to the Memphis Shootout last weekend to kick off their 2008 race season. The team, based in sunny Florida, overcame great difficulty in just traveling to Memphis. The weather wouldn't have a been a factor had they embarked on their journey from their home town of Boca Raton. Instead, the team traveled to Buffalo, NY to pick up the race car at Oddy's Automotive headquarters. "They drove through a snow storm with traveling conditions of 35 mph for probably 10 hours", said team owner Steve Quint. All total, it took over 30 hours for crew members Erik Skatfeld and Greg Krause to bring the rig safely into Memphis.
The team unloaded the race car just in time for driver George Landis to buckle in and make the final session of qualifying. It wasn't a picture-perfect run, but Landis put the Hemi Stratus in the field. In the first round of eliminations, Landis drilled the tree with a .009 light. He could have saved this gate job for another round though, as his opponent's red light instantly gave the first round win to Landis.
In round two, Landis took a bye-run when his opponent experienced mechanical trouble. Back in the pits, the crew discovered that the blower had pulled the studs during the second round run. With the semi-finals on a fast approach the crew scrambled to make the repairs, but fell short by a matter of seconds as they thrashed all the way to the starting line, unable however, to get the car staged in time to make the run. All things considered, the team was pleased with their 2008 debut.
The team was also extremely satisfied with the early data collected from the race, as they debuted a host of new components, never before used prior to the Memphis event. In addition to a brand new Oddy's Automotive power plant, the team had installed a 3-disk clutch, new fuel timer system and a Kebelco M-5 Superman super charger. Reports of an additional 300 hp have been gained in comparison to last year's set up. During this learning curve event, the car shook and danced its way to a best short time of 4.22 @ 175mph. The Hemi-powered Stratus weighed 2,800 pounds for this event.
As a result of the good showing in Memphis, Next Generation Race Team is pleased to announce their invitation to compete in the upcoming Jegs-sponsored NHRA Gator Nationals, an event held in the team's home state of Florida. "We're also pleased to fly the banner of the Jegs Foundation this year", says team owner Steve Quint.
The Coughlin family's personal experience with cancer inspired their commitment to raise public awareness of prevention and raise money for cancer research. "My family was also touched by this disease and I'm proud to be involved with the Jegs Foundation and the incredible work their doing", commented Steve Quint.
