i think 60 minutes did a story on this - i watched it recently on some show?

for credibility sake, i wonder why the people in these videos insist on using
the "f" bomb; not a very 'scientific' vernacular.

one statement in video #1 was.......".......700 million lbs. of polycarbonate
produced annually and is not recyclable........"
trying to infer that 700 million lbs. of polycarbonate ends up in ocean each
year and that is far from the truth.

there's no denying that the plastic waste is out there though.

I think this is where the earth is paying for irresponsible bums at all levels. The amount of trash I see on the sides of roads everywhere is unbelievable. Often right under signs warning what the fines are for littering. I don't care how small a piece of trash is. I carry it or put it in my pocket until I come to a can. All I can hope for after that is that nobody else does the wrong thing. I've yelled at people tossing trash when I see it, too. In a lot of places where trucks park, grass is littered with plastic water jugs full of "yellow" liquid.

I did watch other "Toxic" videos on that site. It does taint their position when you hear obvious indications of bias against business/industry from the people doing them.

In one of the ocean ones, I heard them talking about genetic dysfunctions being caused. I couldn't help that the first thought in my mind was "Kinda like feminine appearing/sounding men and masculine appearing/sounding women?" :D Some of these people obviously seem like they have a psychological ax to grind. They talk about being bummed when they find trash but, they sure act excited at the moment, as if "I have a dagger to stick in the backs of corporations everywhere!" That's the impression I get.

There is a 'graphic language' warning about the video, but I agree, it isn't necessary. In fact, little verbage is necessary for people to get the point. The picture in this case, is certainly worth a 1000 words.

To me, I really don't care what the people in this video say or who they accuse. It isnt the point. The messege is in the message, not the messenger. The point is that this Garbage Dump exists in the Pacific ocean.
And, in many cases, big business is responsible for illegal garbage dumping. The people who made these videos appear to be young, and expressing themselves as many other people who are zealous about whatever cause they are representing. I looked beyond the presenters, and concentrated on the presentation. Would the video be more influential if it had been made professionally? Hard to tell. But most people that I know who are concerned about Environmental issues tend to look and listen through the people raising the issue in cases such as this.

We can no longer treat the earth as if it will not be affected by abuse of its resources. Just my opinion.

This was actually around in the 50's as well.

Big business, packed beaches and their trash, and the government.

By government..I mean the Navy. All trash created on board..went overboard. That was in the 70's..don't know if it's still the policy or not. I was on an oiler..and I won't even get into what happened to extra fuel.

I wouldn't pretend to know who is responsible by volume. They said a lot of it is trash that washes from streets into rivers and out into the oceans. Like I said, irresponsible bums at all levels.

We just saw that article recently about Ted Kennedy's crewmember dumping fuel from his yacht.

I agree with Jackee in that I got the substance from the video despite what appeared to me to be people injecting anti-industry bias. If the stuff tends to collect in a centralized part of the ocean, maybe that's a good thing. Maybe someday we'll have ships out there with nets scooping the stuff up where it's most concentrated. I think it'd be more of a problem if it were evenly dispersed among all the oceans. Then the problem would be harder to spot.

I just wanna know where all those sunken containers of nitromethane are! :D

I couldn't help getting a kick out of their stir crazy problems! In the early 90s I went through the phase that many truckers do. "Come on, honey. We'll both drive a truck and make TWICE the money! Plus, we'll be together ALL THE TIME!" :D

I don't care how well you THINK you know a person. Spend weeks at a time in a cab with them, you'll learn things you never wanted to know! Whenever you get up, there's that face. When you look across the table during any meal, the same face. That face, that face, that face!

Very few COUPLES can do that. Occasionally newbies will tell me their grand idea of how they're gonna partner up with their friend. First thing I ask is if they're willing to lose the friendship over it! :) They usually look at me in total surprise and disbelief of the possibility!

A lot of people like going on cruises but, I've also heard someone say "Imagine being on a floating Motel 6 that you can't leave!"
