MADISON , Ill (May 6) – The competitive Funny Car field claimed more victims at the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals. With rain washing out both qualifying sessions Friday, the field was set after two Saturday qualifying runs, instead of the traditional four.
Six-time champion Kenny Bernstein, whose previous record at Gateway International Raceway included four final round appearances in seven national events, narrowly missed the field.
“We struggled with some tune-up problems in the first run,” explained Bernstein. “With two qualifying sessions cancelled because of rain, our backs were against the wall. Though we made considerable improvement in the second run, we still experienced a clutch problem that caused us to haze the tires. We drove through it because we knew we had to do everything humanly possible to squeeze the best elapsed time out of that run that we could.
“We came close, but unfortunately it just wasn’t quite enough.”
Bernstein is 13th in NHRA Funny Car point standings.
