Fun-filled weekend will kick-off Coughlin's Western Swing

DENVER (July 7) -- Reigning POWERade Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. has a big weekend scheduled in Denver and he would love to add his third Mile-High Nationals trophy to his collection while he visits one of his favorite racetracks on tour.
Coughlin and his son Jeg III start the festivities Thursday at the annual Race to Read Golf Tournament benefiting the primary charity of Bandimere Speedway.
"Team JEGS will be going for the trophy at this year's golf tournament," Coughlin said. "We have Justin Humphreys, my teammate Dave Connolly, and our PR guy Woody Woodruff in our group so at the very least we're going to have some fun and raise some money for the Race to Read program."
During the drag race itself, which Coughlin won outright in 1998 and '99, Coughlin will be driving a special edition of his JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt and wearing a unique helmet that honors the 50th anniversary of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which is located in nearby Colorado Springs, Colo.
"It's definitely added incentive to win this race but we certainly don't need anything to spark our interest in earning another race victory," Coughlin said. "Our teammate Ron Krisher came and tested at Bandimere recently and we were all very encouraged by what he learned. Obviously, it will benefit all three team cars.
"Our JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt has been running great recently; I've just come up a little short as a driver. I plan on fixing that right now and the Western Swing represents a perfect time for me to tune myself up. I love drag racing and I love having three races in a row because you stay in the groove. I expect a big month, quite honestly."
At the midway point of the 24-race schedule, Coughlin has a win, two runner-up finishes, and three semifinal endings to his credit. He's currently fourth in the POWERade points but has been as high as first place on two separate occasions.
"All the pieces remain in place for us to win this weekend and in Seattle and Sonoma for that matter," Coughlin said. "I'm going to turn up the wick this weekend because I love the Bandimere family and would love to celebrate with them. Plus, we have a special tour at NORAD lined up on Monday and I'm going to give them the helmet I'll be wearing so it would be cool if we showed up as the event winners.
"We're going to do everything we can to make it happen."
