Denver (July 16) – Despite a tire-smoking affair at Bandimere Speedway, “Hot Rod” Fuller, driving the Valvoline/David Powers Motorsports Top Fuel dragster, introduced the team owner David Powers’ family to the world of professional drag racing.
The first round final-elimination match-up pitted Fuller, who qualified eighth for Sunday’s event, against ninth-place qualifier David Baca. Both drivers left the line at the same time and Baca quickly started to lose traction and had to pedal the car to regain control. Fuller also started to spin his tires while at the same time shearing the supercharger belt’s teeth, which caused the engine to lose power allowing Baca to slip by for the win..
Record-setting temperatures presented a special challenge to all of the fuel teams at this year’s Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals. “Crew chief Lee Beard knows how to tune for hot track temperatures but this is crazy,” Fuller said. “We made a great run right out of the trailer Friday afternoon with a 4.673-second run at 316 mph that put us in the No. 1 position but nit-picking problems and the heat ultimately knocked us out.”
Fuller’s Valvoline machine tripped the quarter-mile timers at 5.273-seconds at 256 mph to Baca’s 5.171 at 268.49 mph, giving Baca the win.
Team owner David Powers’ brother Paul, who calls Denver home, hosted this year’s family reunion in conjunction with the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing tour event, giving the Powers clan a taste of the sports elite Top Fuel division.
“It’s amazing what turning wrenches on a dairy farm can instill in a boy,” Paul Powers said in reference to their family’s dairy farm in Iowa. “David took the mechanical skills he honed on the family farm in the 1960s and put them to use on the drag strip. We can’t begin to tell you how impressed the entire Powers family has been with what David has accomplished in such a competitive sport.
The second stop on the three-race Western Swing portion takes place next week at Pacific Raceways in Seattle with the Schuck’s NHRA Nationals.
