ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 23, 2007) – Rod Fuller, the current NHRA Top Fuel points leader, remained hot in qualifying Saturday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The rising Top Fuel star qualified his plain white David Powers-owned dragster second Saturday afternoon at Raceway Park with a qualifying-best 4.479-second effort.
Fuller qualified second for the fifth time this season when he used a tune-up from crew chief Rob Flynn to race his all-white rail to a blistering run of 4.479 seconds at 330.30 mph on Friday evening. The pass positioned him behind Tony Schumacher, who earned the pole with a run of 4.450-seconds. Fuller’s tires broke loose on Saturday’s first qualifying attempt. The four-time NHRA Top Fuel winner and defending Raceway Park champ then clocked the second quickest pass of the final qualifying session when he used Flynn power to card a run of 4.624 at 320.20. Fuller has not qualified lower than fourth this season.
“We would have liked to have gone down the track a few more times, but that last run gives us a lot of confidence,” Flynn said. “We were the quickest car to half track on that last run. We’ll have to be really careful to not spin the tires. It gives us a close idea of what to do to the car.”
Fuller will match up against No. 15 qualifier Rit Pustari in the first round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday. The Las Vegas racer has never met Pustari in eliminations. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday evening.
