Tragic story.. And yet it continues to be so difficult to convince Town elders to make the investment in a sanctioned place to race...:(

That would have happened about 10 minutes from Bristol Dragway which, besides their weekly bracket program, had Friday Night Street Fights (or something like that) for street legal racing.

We used to test and tune there on Fridays. I think our sessions were over at 10PM, and they'd have all those (mostly kids) packed into a seperate parking lot, letting them in after we'd leave. One night I got out of my dragster in the staging lanes during a delay. Walked over to the fence and was AMAZED at how many of them were out there waiting to get in.

They had a multi-million dollar sanctioned facility that they could have raced at. No excuse.

Didn't realize that it was so close to Bristol, Ron.. That being the case, we KNOW the Mustang driver was probably a run-what-ya-brung participant, and the Viper guy had probably been out there a couple of times too, figuring out how fast his toy could go... If either had been to the track, and HAD GOTTEN IT, what they did on the street that night (supposedly for about a mile ) was completely inexcusable just from the standpoint that they KNEW WHERE they could go to prove who had the biggest sack... Sad that an innocent life had to be lost because of ignorant bravado..

Yeah, they call the area the Tri-Cities, which is comprised of Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City, all very close together. When people fly in for the Bristol race, they land in Johnson City (unless you're Bruton, then you land YOUR chopper on YOUR hill at YOUR track, LOL)

I realize that saying they had no excuse sounds like I'm saying that if someone lives far enough away from a track, they have an excuse. This WOULD have to be a touchy subject on this board, though. How many of us didn't do this when we were younger?

The way we prosecute and sentence based on results instead of intentions. The fact that the girl got killed when they did it and nobody got killed when we did it is only seperated by dumb luck. Same as what I've said about drunk driving and armed robbery.

If ten people are guilty of drunk driving on the same night and one is unlucky enough to kill someone? If the punishment for drag racing on the street was the same whether you killed someone or not, maybe these guys wouldn't have taken the chance simply based on the higher consequence. THEN if they did it, I wouldn't feel sorry for them.

Same as if two people commit armed robbery and shoot someone in the process. You know if one victim dies and the other doesn't, one will get a stiffer sentence. Shouldn't the penalty reflect the worst possible result of your actions?

When I was growing up..we always had a stretch of road outside of town that was designated for seeing who had the baddest. Maybe a squirt from a red light..but NEVER going a friggin mile!!

I just hate to see anyone get hurt from plain stupidity.

My heart goes out to the families.
