Fast start places Coughlin fourth

CHICAGO (July 28) -- Troy Coughlin has qualified his JEG'S Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier Pro Street racecar in the No. 4 position after two of three qualifying sessions at this weekend's Motive Gear NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing I.

Despite track temperatures that reached as high as 126 degrees, the former NHRA Pro Stock star posted a 6.651-second pass at 210.70 mph down a hot and greasy Route 66 Raceway to qualify deep in the Denso Spark Plugs Pro Street field.

"It was very hot today so I'm really pleased with how the JEG'S car ran," Coughlin said. "We're going to try a different torque converter tomorrow to get this car to work a little better in this warm air. We just feel like we're giving up a little too much in the first 60 feet. Otherwise, we're pretty happy with what we've accomplished so far."

Coughlin and the rest of the NMCA Pro Edelbrock series racers will have one more qualifying session Saturday at noon before eliminations begin at 5 p.m.

"We have a good, consistent, reliable racecar," Coughlin said. "It hasn't been the quickest or the fastest car at any of the races we've been to this year but it's not very often where the No. 1 qualifier actually wins the race so maybe its for the better. I'll take consistency over being the low qualifier any time, especially when it's really hot like it has been here."

There are more than 700 street cars on the grounds at Route 66 Raceway. Aside from the NMCA (the National Muscle Car Association), the NMRA (National Mustang Racing Association) is also competing at this event. Once each sanction crowns a champion in each category, the two winners will race heads-up.

"There's a lot on the line," said Coughlin, who is currently third in the NMCA standings. "We have a chance to close in on the points lead and maybe win a race. Then we can go out there and run the NMRA guys and see who has the quickest car."
