I am surprised that the F1 rules specify cast iron cranks for the engines. I thought they would be billet steel give the high RPMs. I wonder if this is a way of trying to cut down costs. In other words, if teams were left to experiment with crank materials, they would come up with some esoteric high strength light steel alloy for even higher revs. I bet Race Engine Technology would cover this is some issue.
