So one of the most popular motorsports shows on TV is a reality show about illegal street racing and you want the NHRA to distance themselves from it. Wheres the money in that?
Bennett's right; so are the Bandimeres but I don't think it much matters. You'll never convince a bunch of people living in a nearby senior-citizen subdivision that all that noise they're hearing isn't inherently evil, and those who embrace drag racing and all the noise don't need to be told what Bieber was out doing. So it's kind of a waste of time and breath; the media is never going to stop calling it 'drag racing'.
Arguing over what people call it is a waste of time. It's time to remember our roots. Wally started NHRA to get people in off the streets. It was a worthy cause, was warmly received in all quarters, and was very effective.
NHRA or Bandimere or someone should buy a ton of spots on that silly show with their "race on the track, not on the streets" tag line. Add in a few ads promoting the nitro racing, and I bet you'd see a real effect. It's called "going TO the customer".
That would be a perfect idea. The NHRA just always seem to wait for someone else to take the bait and run with it before proactively doing anything. NHRA could do a lot more to fix the image of the sport and they do nothing. If I am wrong, at least I don't see it.
if the stands were full and the TV ratings were above 1 we would not be having this conversation.
the problems the NHRA mello yello series is facing with declining attendance and ratings is not even
remotely related to the media's interpretation of the term 'drag racing', IMO they are tied to the perceived
value of their product.
the usual laundry list: 1000' / loss of cackle & long burnouts / countdown / ticket prices / parking prices /
no more chasing 1/4 mile et & mph records / wide screen tv's / competition for disposable income / etc.
their is no doubt the correct vernacular should be educated, learned and used, but i don't think it's incorrect
use is very high on the list of problems plaguing the NHRA mello yello series.
Michael Knight really wrote a winner here. This is what needs to be fixed. Sure, actual event attendance is an issue, but when you can't even get 1 million people to watch eliminations on tv something needs to change. Ratings have been awful for years and nothing ever is done about it, yet the NHRA is, "Happy the first 3 National Events have finalized TV spots." Really? It is not ESPN's fault, it is the model of our show that I have been saying on here for years. 3 hours has to be ditched and when it is a fast paced show the ratings will comeback no matter what time it is on.
