Eighth on Friday, Anderson Targets Improvement in Topeka (1 Viewer)

Although rain throughout the day in the Topeka area threatened to wash out the opening day of qualifying for the NHRA Summer Nationals, with their sessions not scheduled until late in the day, the professional classes were actually able to wait out the weather and run as originally planned. Coming off their strong runner-up finish in Atlanta five days ago, Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team looked to pick up where they left off and rolled to the line ready to tackle the tricky Heartland Park Topeka surface.

After opening with a solid 6.688-second, 205.44 mph pass the four-time Topeka winner improved only slightly on his second attempt, posting a 6.687-second time with a top speed of 205.98 mph. Disappointed at sitting eighth midway through the qualifying procedure, the KB Racing crew began an immediate analysis of the data from their two runs as they looked to better their standing for race day.

“That was certainly not the day we were looking for,” said Anderson. “We weren’t making very good runs or getting down the racetrack, so both the car and the motor were lagging behind. We certainly have our work cut out for us, so we’re just going to put today behind us and focus on doing a better job tomorrow. The weather is supposed to change for Saturday, which could actually work in our favor.

“In any case, we’re going to get to work, going through the data from all of our runs today to see what we need to do to dial ourselves in to this race track. The good news is we know that between Jason, Ronnie (teammates Line and Humphrey) and myself we have three very good race cars, and we have the best crew in the pit area working on them. The answer is out there, and it’s just up to us to make sure we find it.”
