MORRISON, Colo. – His goals going into his first Mopar Mile-High Nationals qualifying session were to qualify and then improve the performance of his Nitro Fish Top Fuel dragster, and that’s just what Steve Chrisman did.
After notching his quickest qualifying time Saturday on his final attempt, 4.4288 seconds at 273.83 mph – and securing the 16th starting spot – Chrisman came back on Sunday and ran event better in the first round of eliminations. His 4.207 at 275.56 mph 1,000-foot lap wasn’t enough to catch No. 1 Del Worsham’s 4.029 at 306.19, but it was the second-quickest among the seven other first-round runners up.
“It was a good run, and we are happy with it,” said a smiling Chrisman. “That’s what I predicted we would run, and we were able to improve on each run. We are getting a good baseline tune-up.”
Chrisman joins the throng of professional racers who will be racing at sea level again Friday in Sonoma, Calif., in the second of NHRA’s three-race Western Swing.
