SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 22, 2007) - The 2006 racing season witnessed a finish to remember in Torco Race Fuels Pro Nitro Funny Car, as the championship wasn't decided until the final pass in Rockingham. Dale Creasy Jr. became the first IHRA Nitro Funny Car Champion in nearly two decades when he left Rockingham after a final round showdown with Jack Wyatt. While Wyatt would win the round and the event, Creasy would hold on and edge out Jack Wyatt for the five point margin of victory for the championship.
Five points - that's it!
According to Creasy you can expect more of the same in 2007.
"I certainly hope it does not come down to the final race... because I can't take it," said a laughing Creasy. "If it comes down to that - great! That's good drag racing. It went down to the wire [last season] but that is the way it is supposed to be. You can expect another great season of racing."
In 2006 Creasy earned three wins and two additional top qualifying positions, but he will not let his past success ruin his pursuit of a second championship for the Torco Nitro Funny Car.
"I try not to think about it very much," says Creasy. "We're proud of it, but you're only as good as your last race. We know there is a lot of racing to do. We couldn't do it without Evan Knoll and Torco Racing Fuels. It's amazing what he does for this sport and for this team."
Last season got off to a rocky start for Creasy's team at San Antonio as the throttle stuck, sending the nitro rocket through the beach and onto a neighboring lawn.
"We had a rough outing last year, but it was a good track." Creasy added, "The throttle stuck and the car stayed on over seven seconds. We were just lucky to have a car to race after that."
Despite a tough start a year ago the defending champion is reading to get back on the track and defend his crown.
"It's going to be a good field in San Antonio," says the defending champion. "That's what we have been working for in IHRA racing. We're trying to get some better competition over here. Last year was good and this year I expect more to come over and play with us this year."
Dale Creasy, Jr. and his Torco Nitro Funny Car partner with high quality and performance companies like; Torco Race Fuels, Oakley, Red Line Oil, MSD, Crane Cams, BME, Fram Autolite, Polydyn TX7, TEK PAK, VSI, GM Performance and Beaver Shredding.
