SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 27, 2007) - Race fans of South Texas saw an all Torco Nitro Funny Car final, as Dale Creasy Jr. dueled with Gary Densham for the first title of the '07 campaign. When the dust settled, Creasy picked up where the reigning World Champion left off... in the winner’s circle.
"I finally have a trophy that doesn’t need a passport to go home," said a laughing Creasy, refering to his first win in the United States. "When we got here we didn’t have much of a clue what was happening. Here I was the defending champion and I wasn’t going to make the show. But in the last pass, I could tell the car was sounding better."
Entering the final round of qualifying on Saturday night Creasy found himself on the outside looking in as he hadn't qualified in his previous attempts.
"We had the new car this weekend and we were struggling. We went to Gainesville and hurt the motor last weekend. I almost broke out the old car because I knew that one could go down the track," commented the World Champion. "But, I knew we had too much money and time invested in this car. We knew we would get it worked out."
Once qualified, Creasy ripped up the track making his way to the finals to face long time friend and mentor, Gary Densham.
"I have raced him a bunch of times and I have never beaten him. I knew he was over there and we are such good friends that I had to just run my race," said Creasy. "I patterned our team after him. He has been racing for a long time and I owe him a lot for showing me the ropes of how to make a team work."
With a season opening win under his belt, Creasy and his team feels they are gaining confidence but realize they have to stay focused on their race.
While this is the team's fourth win in the last two seasons, this one is a little different. This race was won on the eight mile, as the IHRA made overnight adjustments to the track on Friday evening to address safety concerns.
"I am a fan of the eighth mile. It is definitely a part saver. It is good for the people and it was definitely good for me," said Creasy after the race. "We have had tire issues for a couple of years now and it is the speed that is doing it. I would certainly not be against going to an eighth mile format. The fans will get a better show in the eighth mile. There are fewer oil downs and they get to see a better race."
Excited to begin the '07 race season with a victory, Creasy realizes that he has help along the way to reach this level of competition.
"I would not be here with out Evan Knoll and Torco. Evan Knoll took us under his wing. He quite frankly saved my career because we were about done and he came in and made it possible for us to race at this level," said a thankful Creasy. "In fact, without Evan Knoll most of us would not be here. He sponsors a lot of guys out here and that makes this possible."
Creasy's Torco Nitro Funny car will be back in action in Rockingham for the second Nitro Jam event of the season.
