Coughlin looks to build on early-season success

DELAWARE, Ohio (April 10) – Last month in Orlando, Fla., John Coughlin had a
dream weekend as he debuted his new Undercover Chassis dragster with a win in the Top Dragster class. Now Coughlin is eager to see if his good fortune will continue as he heads to O’Reilly Raceway Park for the traditional season-opening Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Since the Top Dragster class isn’t being contested at this weekend’s event, Coughlin has chosen to race his new Undercover Chassis dragster in Super Comp. He will also race his new Chevy Cobalt in Super Stock.

“The only thing that could have made Orlando better is if we had won with both cars,” said Coughlin. “Obviously, that’s a pretty tall order but that’s my goal for this weekend. Both of my cars ran well in testing and I’m already feeling very comfortable in the driver’s seat so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be competitive this weekend.

Coughlin has an additional reason to be optimistic as he's experienced his fair share of success at O’Reilly Raceway Park, one of NHRA’s oldest and most historic venues. Coughlin won the Super Gas title at the 1994 Lucas Oil Series event and was also a runner-up at the 2000 U.S. Nationals in the Pro Stock Truck class. Coughlin has also had success as a car owner as family friend Brad Plourd drove his JEGS Mail Order dragster to the Super Comp title at the 2005 U.S. Nationals.

“To say that this is one of my favorite places to race would be an understatement,” said Coughlin. “I’ve been coming to Indy for as long as I remember. I used to watch my father race here when I was a little kid and I have a lot of great memories from this place. Hopefully, we can make a few more this weekend.”

Coughlin’s next Top Dragster start will be the Lucas Oil Series event in Norwalk, Ohio, May 18-20.
