Raymond Commisso and his Steelback Racing '67 Camaro Pro Modified have started the 2007 season in an impressive manner. Commisso's newly formed Com-And Racing team had a very successful pre-season testing session in Valdosta, Ga. to work out new rule combinations and get Ray consistent with swapping feet once again. The subsequent result was a 6.000 @ 242 mph.
Commisso and his team, consisting of crew chief and partner Ralph Andreacchi, crew members Sam Misoula, Frank Lombardi, Frank Frederico and Harry Hibbs moved onward to the AC Delco Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida.
Commisso qualified for the Gainesville field with a 6.03 @ 240 mph which placed him in the # 6 spot for the ultra quick AMS Pro Mod series field. The Steelback Beer entry made history in the first round of eliminations when the team posted a historic 5.98 @ 242 mph. This placed Commisso in the elite 5 second club and became the first Canadian Pro Mod to run a 5 second pass.
Commisso states, "I'm just real happy. We have put all the right pieces together to be successful. Jim Salemi of G-Force Race Cars Inc has built us a great car, and Al Billes has provided the necessary horsepower to be at the top. Al has also tuned the car and made it very consistent and fast."
Commisso went on to lose in the semi final against eventual winner Josh Hernandez in the first side by side 5-second Pro Mod run. All in all, Gainesville was a success.
Com-And Racing then traveled on to San Antonio, Texas for the first IHRA race of the year. Needless to say, it was an adventure. After laying down a #1 qualifying shot of 6.10 @ 233 mph the racetrack was shortened to an 1/8 mile race due to a crumbling track surface. Commisso and his Al Billes tuned hot rod once again stole the pole, this time with a 3.96 @ 188 mph. As first round came to be, another weird situation developed as most supercharged cars shook the tires. Unfortunately so did the Steelback Camaro resulting in a first round loss.
Crew chief Ralph Andreacchi stated, "Al Billes' R&D work over the winter has paid off , all the hours of hard work is showing on the race track with our sub 5 second runs and 240 plus mph, We are very pleased with the engine and gearing program for 2007."
The team will continue its 2007 road trip and travel on to the second leg of the NHRA AMS Pro Mod Series presented by Tindle Ent. for the NHRA O'Reilley Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas.
