TOPEKA, Ks. – After rain dominated the skies early Friday at Hartland Park and NHRA Summer Nationals action was suspended Saturday afternoon because of tornado and severe weather warnings for the Topeka area, Steve Chrisman was questioning his decision to make the long trip from his Anaheim, Calif. home
By Sunday afternoon, though, the driver of the Nitro Fish Top Fuel dragster marveled at the fact he was able to make four qualifying runs and his first-round race against Del Worsham.
“After the way weather looked on Friday, I am amazed we got in four qualifying rounds and the race,” he said. “This was our third race of the year and we are still trying to dial in our new blower and five-disc clutch. We made changes on every run. Now we need some more runs to work on the combination.
“We’re learning and it is beginning to show promise . . . it just takes time.”
The sun was shining brightly Sunday when Chrisman lost his first-round race to Del Worsham, 3.826 seconds at 319.72 mph to 6.060 at 108.94. It was his quickest 1,000-foot run of the weekend after four qualifying runs that had traction problems.
Chrisman and crew chief Kevin Meredyk will resume their tune-up research during NHRA’s annual Western Swing – consecutive races at Denver (July 24), Sonoma, Calif. (July 31) and Seattle (Aug. 5-7).
