I worked for the Gold Agency as a Tech Inspector and I can tell you it wasn't unusual to have 40 Funny cars and 50 Pro Stocks at US 30 and about half that number at Oswego.

A Chicago Funny Car story. One afternoon, Bill Muskitas (Palamides' partner) and I went over to the building where there were 4 stalls rented out to Ken Safford, Austin Coil, and Cliff Brown and ? Everyone is getting ready to head out to US 30 for the Wed. night FC show. It's well past noon and Cliff says I need to run up to O'Hare to pick up my new crank! So he leaves and everyone else is loading cars into trailers. Cliff returns and he and his wrench are thrashing the engine together to make it to the race. He pulled into the gate with not a minute to spare and in typical Cliff Brown fashion he makes the final round. Cliff was a character like no other. Not a care in the world.
