As of Saturday the 5th, I have been at this shop for 13 years. Here is an interesting progression for you.

In 1995......

Oil Change 19.95
2-wheel align 59.95
Wheel Balance 9.75 each
Valve Stem 1.50 each
Flat repair 16.00
Coolant Flush 49.95
Hourly labor rate 72.00

In 2008.......

Oil Change 39.95
2-wheel align 69.95
Wheel Balance 12.75 each
Valve Stem 3.50 each
Flat repair 18.50
Coolant Flush 104.95
Hourly labor rate 97.50

Oil changes made the jump last week, after being held at 34.95 for a long while. We finally budged after our bulk oil went up almost 40% from March until our last delivery on June 30.

Anyone else have any stuff like this to share? Amazing how much things have jumped over the past several years.

I sell land and in 1995 we had lots near Lake Pleasant Road and Happy Valley in the high $30Ks. I purchased one for $35K. I am getting ready to break ground on a new custom on that lot but I have been offered over $600K for the lot. That's worse than your oil change increase, right?

I can remember in high school a 32oz fountain drink was .39 at a local convenience store......

And I'll 3rd that insurance vote!!!!

Tire services still look reasonable. Hopefully your Profits have gone up some too!

Oh please, not this one again! Gas prices in the UK are running about $10.50 today!

I understand that yall have been paying that, but its still a punch in the gut to those of us as well thats had it quadruple over the last 10 years as well even if we are still only paying half what you guys do. Trust me, I feel for you guys as well. Its ridiculous.

Actual profits haven't changed much with continuous rising costs, workers comp, shop insurance, etc. And a ton of competition in this area doesn't help either. But being diverse does, we are the only shop in town that will fix your flat tire, replace clutches, trans, head gaskets, and even an engine swap now and then. But I prefer to concentrate on the smaller quick work, brakes, front end, A/C, etc. That is the fast easy money. The high dollar amount of the big jobs looks good on paper, but you never seem to get paid for the time those jobs actually take. And as far as tires, that is not where you make your money, that is for sure. Especially Michelin products, your lucky to make 5% to 10% on a Michelin tire.

Went in a grocery store a week or so ago where I know a clerk . She said prices are going up so fast she can't keep up . Price increases are coming in again before the product gets its last increase posted.

On a political [ well sort of ] side note I had a standing bet with an investment friend that the FED would not be able nor would it make sense to try to further print our way out of this crisis because at some point you have to pay the piper and the further you go the further you will fall.
No even with the Dollar approaching junk status we are going to keep hemmoraging money at Ill conceived loans that total almost as much as the national debt.
Looks like I lost!

Well let me say this. My wife and I just finished buying our first house and moved in getting everything set up. So Sunday morning we went grocery shopping to buy all the essentials since we didnt ahve anything. We spent over $400! I about died. Apparently I havent been paying attention in the stores, but since when have freaking spices been $5 to $7 a bottle?

Justin, we have started to buy our spices in the Mexican food isle, they come in little cellophane packets for WAY less money. .69 per packet, and there is quite a bit in there. I do know exactly where you are coming from though, I had to get some ground cloves for a recipe, and that bottle was over $7!!

A customer of mine that works in the grocery industry said that some companies are not raising their prices much, but reducing the quantity that you get, going from 16oz to 14oz.

Alan, starting on July 1st, parts and service at our dealership are no longer open. I didnt a lot of research and it comes out to about a $20,000 saving per month.

Another choice is to grow some of them. The ones I grow that get most use in the house are: thyme, rosemary, basil, dill, tarragon, oregano, chives, parsley and, of course, garlic. They are much fresher when dried at home. They are also some of the produce that my mom sells at the open air market. Another good place to shop for fresh produce.

If you buy the others you can't grow as Alan suggests, you can recycle the jars to keep them in if you are worried about sealing the packets between uses.

I heard years ago that the majority of the higher UK gas price is taxes. Also that one reason we have cheaper is that we refine in much greater volume.

Not that I'd complain about taxes (LOL) but, what irks me is that there are politicians out there complaining that the government is not getting the PERCENTAGE of profit on a gallon of gas that they were now that the price has gone up so much. That's their mentality! Nevermind that they've raped us for years with taxes figured into a gallon of gas that were higher percentage wise than almost anything else you could buy at the register! Of course, alcohol and tobacco already have taxes figured in, then you STILL pay sales tax on top! Why the hell they always thought gas was so special that they could hit us with higher levels of sales tax already figured into the price to begin with?

I believe the road to communism/socialism/secular progressiveness/economic downfall (whichever term makes you feel better about it) for this country was opened the day they implemented progressive taxes, which is exactly what Karl Marx said you'd need to keep wealth distributed and help keep individuals from succeeding.
