(5-7-2007) CHARLOTTE, NC – Charles Carpenter qualified his World’s Fastest ’55 Chevy solidly in the number four position with a 4.057, 179 MPH pass during Friday night’s qualifying under the lights at the Flowmaster ADRL’s 3rd Annual Camp Motorsport Georgia Drags in Valdosta. After the first round of qualifying, the impressive Pro Nitrous field ranged from Mike Castellana’s 4.043 to Thomas Myers’ 4.127.
Even more impressive was Carpenter’s performance during the second round of qualifying at high noon on Saturday. Under a blazing sun that raised ambient temperatures to over 93 degrees and the track temperature to 125+ degrees, Carpenter recorded the quickest run of the session, a 4.067 at almost 182 MPH. That number would stand throughout the last round of qualifying as well, making Carpenter the quickest Pro Nitrous competitor of the day before eliminations.
“We were thrilled with the number it put up on Saturday,” said Carpenter. “A run like that in those conditions had us feeling very confident about our setup heading into eliminations.”
Carpenter would be paired up with #13 qualifier Mike Lockwood in his ’66 Corvette. Lockwood posted a best of 4.09 during qualifying.
“We had lane choice, and had made that 4.06 run in the left lane earlier in the day, so that’s the lane we went with,” Carpenter recalled. “The starting line looked a little better in the right lane, but down track the left looked better.”
That starting line caused immediate problems for Carpenter’s Tommy Mauney-built machine, as the car drifted right and went into tire shake, handing the win to Lockwood.
“The car hadn’t even thought about shaking the tires all weekend, and it does it when we needed it to happen the least,” said Carpenter. “It’s a real disappointment, especially after how well we were running all weekend.”
In other action, the much-delayed finals from Kennedale, TX were finally completed, with Terry Housley taking with win over Harold Martin. The event’s completion also allowed the other drivers who competed in the race to collect their points. As Carpenter was not in attendance at that race, he dropped from first to seventh in the Battle for the Belts points standings.
“We would have loved to perform better this weekend for our supporters, Custom Autosound and Doherty Motorsports, but we are onto something with this car’s performance,” said the multi-time USSC and Super Chevy champion. “We’re already looking forward to Huntsville.”
