CARLSBAD, Calif. (July 18 2008) - After Ron Capps spied his NAPA AUTO PARTS racing partner Michael Waltrip wearing a Ron Capps t-shirt under his driving suit during a NASCAR event, Capps felt obliged to reciprocate. And he did so, in style.
The driver of the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series gathered up a collection of Michael Waltrip t-shirts and wore his favorite while winning the first round of eliminations at last Sunday's Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway outside of Denver.
"I saw the picture of Michael wearing the Ron Capps t-shirt under his suit," said Capps, who with Waltrip shot a series of some very humorous NAPA AUTO PARTS commercials this season. "So we decided that we were going to sneak around and pick up a couple of Michael Waltrip t-shirts. The best part of it was winning first round in Denver while I was wearing the shirt underneath my driver's suit.
"Michael had a little bit of bad luck last weekend in Daytona. I thought maybe we were both going to be in the winner's circle that weekend, but we both missed out.
"When we did the NAPA commercial shoot, one of the commercials for Michael was with a crazy fan and the shirt the fan was wearing was a picture of Michael with a crazy look in his eyes. Somebody from the shoot gave me the shirt and that is the shirt that I wore first round.
"When I pulled off the top part of my driving suit at the other end of the track, the ESPN2 people about fell over. They thought it was the funniest thing in the world.
"We were hoping to bring Michael more good luck, so maybe we'll surprise everybody this weekend in Seattle and wear another No. 55 NAPA t-shirt."
Capps will be competing in Round 14 of the 24-event NHRA series this weekend in Seattle.
