Capps Posts Four Consistent Runs to Qualify No. 6 in Sonoma

SOMONA, Calif.(July 29) -- NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car points leader Ron Capps and the Brut Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team put together a string of four impressive qualifying runs to garner the No. 6 spot in the Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway.
Of the four passes, it was the 4.821-second elapsed time (second quickest of the round) at 320.81 mph in the final session that earned him that position. His other laps this weekend included a 4.973/298.14, a 4.851/314.17 and a 4.848/319.07.

The only bad news is that he will face his teammate Whit Bazemore in the first round of eliminations on Sunday. Capps lost to Bazemore in the final round last Sunday in Seattle.

"It gives you a lot of confidence going into Sunday," said Capps, who also receives support from Knoll Gas-Torco Race Fuels. "The great part about our Brut Dodge guys is as soon the (final) run was over they were back in the pit area and focused on tomorrow.

"There's no time for celebration that we ran that good," he added. "As far as Full Throttle points go (for most consistent qualifier), that's huge. I'm not sure we won that award yet, but I imagine going down the track four times has won it for us. That just tells you about the Brut crew and what they did. That award gets pretty serious for the crew guys and the crew chief."

As for racing Bazemore in the opening round, "It's going to be interesting," he said. "It's nice to have lane choice. One thing we don't want to do is run Todd (Okuhara, Bazemore's crew chief) and those guys. It's unfortunate because not only are we teammates, that's a tough car. And that's obvious because they beat us in the final in Seattle.

"We're still enjoying ourselves. We're not thinking about the championship to the point where it's going to make us sick and not enjoy this. So, we're just going about our business and keep going down the track and see what happens on Sunday."

Capps entered this event 88 points ahead of second-place John Force.

"This track has just been great," said Capps. "To watch the cars in all categories go down the track in both lanes is a tribute to this track."
