CAPPS ON A TEAR, QUALIFIES NO. 3 IN POMONA

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2007) - Ron Capps scorched the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona's quarter-mile this weekend with four stellar passes to qualify No. 3 for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series' season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Capps' four laps in the Brut Revolution Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car were quick, fast, and consistent, with the final one, a 4.709 at a career-best 331.45 mph, holding up for No. 3 behind his teammate Gary Scelzi, and Robert Hight.

His other laps included a 4.741/327.82, 4.782/323.43 and a 4.727/330.55.

"To run a big speed, and to run over 330 mph twice was awesome," said Capps."People have probably heard us talk in the off-season about trying to make ourselves run better under cooler conditions and run faster. We really worked on all that. And it's showing. It wasn't just testing that showed that we can run this good. We're excited.

"I'm so happy for Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) and for all his hard work all winter long. I got to go on the Brut cruise and do all the fun stuff all winter, and he worked on all this and it's paying off.

"It's great to run 331 mph and to qualify No. 3 at the opening race. We were shooting for that Full Throttle award, but I think Scelzi might have gotten us for that. But that's OK. We're just so excited right now. It's a good start.

"I was surprised that when we ran .70 flat that we were No. 3, because I thought Force ran the same (Capps and Force ran identical elapsed times), but they said we beat him on speed (Force's speed was 326.40 mph). That's something else you never heard about the Brut car in the past, that we would have beaten someone on speed, because the last two years we didn't."

Capps faces Bob Gilbertson in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday, which will air on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. ET.
