MOHNTON, Pa. (Aug. 20, 2007) - NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car points leader Ron Capps won his first round over Kenny Bernstein on Sunday morning before the rains came and postponed the rest of the event until Monday.
Driving the Brut "Test Drive" Dodge Charger R/T, Capps got loose at the end of the track in that opening round, but managed to take the victory over Bernstein with a 4.899-second elapsed time at 200.46 mph to Bernstein's 4.959/248.71. Dampness on the track may have contributed to both cars' performance.
Monday dawned under an overcast sky but dry conditions, as Capps faced Tony Pedregon in the second round. Pedregon launched first, with a .055 reaction time, and Capps responded with a .103. It was a close contest, but Pedregon reached the finish stripe first by 12 feet over Capps, winning on a holeshot advantage with a 4.848/315.78 to Capps' 4.826/318.17.
"We got beat," said Capps. "Those are tough to swallow, but we are excited to have our hot rod back. "We're focused on going to Indy and testing (for two days this week before the U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend), and when it rains like this and the guys have to stay around, and as hard as they work, you hate to lose that way.
"But, as much as I hate to say it, the most important thing is that the car is back to our normal Brut car. Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) made a great call on that run. He chose the right lane and it went right down the track. It's been tricky for a lot of people all day.
"We just lost a close race and the car was second quickest of the round. We're going to go to Indy and at least test on Wednesday. It's going to be like a national event there. There will be a lot of cars testing, and then we're going to gear up for the U.S. Nationals and the Countdown."
Capps clinched the No. 1 spot for the Countdown to Four, ending the first phase of the Countdown to the Championship 78 points ahead of Robert Hight (1117-1039).
Next up is the U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park outside of Indianapolis, Aug. 29-Sept. 3.
